What is ASME B16.5

ASME B16.5 Introductions

This is an American standard for pipe flanges and flanges fitting to size NPS 1/2 through NPS 24 metric/inch, all temperature pressure, dimension, tolerance and materials, and its testing and methods of designate opening of pipes flanges and fittings cover within its. For example flange rating class designated as follow 150, 300, 400, 900, and 1500 with different sizes like NPS 1/2 through NPS 24 metric/inch . ASME B16.5 cover pressure class 150 to 2500 only. Term B16.5 or B 16 5 or ANSI B 16.5 are all used interchangeably and that refers to the same standard.

Note, ASME B16.5 is monitored, regulated, or may be revised by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers only, and they are owners of ASME standards. This article is only for share knowledge to beginners only. I f any body wants to read full standard Kindly visit https://www.asme.org/. This is used the same as ASME B16.11 (Socketweld fittings)

Note – This is general note socket weld and threaded fitting are mostly used for up to 1.5” bore size. Under this standard forged fittings may be furnished with socket-welding ends connection type, threaded ends  connection type, or a combination of both like the socket-welding end and threaded ends.

What is the difference between ASME B16.5 and ASME B16.47?

Basic difference between ASME B16.5 and ASME B16.47

Both ASME standard B16.5 and B16.47 cover the same specification, the only difference between them is that B16.5 use for size class 150 to 2500 (1/2 to 24 NPS) where as ASME B16.47 standard specifications are used for bigger sizes, this is also covers pressure-temperature ratings, materials, dimensions, tolerances, marking, and testing for pipe flanges in sizes NPS 26 through NPS 60 (75, 150, 300, 400, 600, and 900) pressure rating class.

Now days there are different types of flanges used in industry and plants (Petrochemical, Refinery, Chemical Power Plant and Pharmaceticle Oil And Gas ) like weld neck flanges, slip-on flanges, blind flanges, socket weld flanges, lap joint flanges, threaded flanges, etc. ASME B16.5 Forged Flanges are made up of stainless steel, carbon steel etc. and available with sizes NPS ½ to 24 inch. The ASME B16.5 Flanges are the best for smooth operations and maintenance for appropriate services fluids. But each flange has different standard dimensions. That is help in flanges and fitting inspecting faults in a small section of the pipe becomes easier.

ASME B16.5 standard specification covers all Steel Pipe Flanges and Flanged Fittings from NPS 1/2 up to NPS 24 Metric/Inch with pressure rating class 150 to class 2500. all temperature pressure, dimension, tolerance and materials, and its testing and methods of designate opening of pipes flanges and fittings cover within its and methods of designating openings for pipe flanges and flanged fittings. But standard ASME B16 5 (ANSI B16 5) covers maximum fitting size up to 24 inches.

ASME B16.47 temperature pressure, dimension, tolerance and materials, and its testing and methods of designate opening of pipes flanges and fittings cover within its flanges in sizes NPS 26 through NPS 60 and in ratings Classes 75, 150, 300, 400, 600, and 900.

The latest version of ASME B16.47 provides dimensions in both metric and inch units

Term B16.47 or B 16 47 or ANSI B 16 47 are all used interchangeably and they refer to the same standard.
